Twelve projects selected as finalists at Next Lab Generation 2024

The teasers produced by the finalists during the seven weeks of the workshop will be screened during the event in Madrid. On Saturday, March 2nd, an international jury will select the best projects of the fourth edition. The winners of the workshop will receive €8,000 in development aid, three months of mentoring, a travel grant and registration for the Annecy 2024 Festival.

In ten days from today, the fourth edition of Next Lab Generation in Madrid will bring together the most avant-garde professionals in the use of new technologies for the production of animation and videogames. The event is the conclusion of Next Lab Generation’s workshop, in which 20 animation projects have delved into the use of tools belonging to the virtual environment to optimize both creative and production processes. The twelve finalists of the fourth edition have been announced today.

Just seven weeks after announcing the projects participating in the workshop, the first phase has ended, in which participants have worked with virtual reality tools and real-time rendering engines, accompanied and advised by industry experts. In these few weeks, the participants have faced various challenges while learning to use the technological tools on which the training is based, and have produced in record time an unpublished teaser for their projects. During the workshop, they had group and individual tutorials and masterclasses with industry professionals, who have guided them through the process to get the most out of the training. During the second phase, the twelve projects selected as finalists will focus on preparing the final stretch of the call, which will end with a pitch in front of the jury and the public attending the event.

These conferences and networking sessions on the latest in innovation and new technologies in the field of animation and videogames, will take place on February 29th and March 1st and 2nd at Espacio Rastro Madrid. Registration is available at Eventbrite until tomorrow February 20, at 11:59 pm Madrid time.

Once again this year, the selection of projects participating in the workshop shows the wealth of talent in the industry, and in the end there will be twelve participants in the second phase of the workshop as finalists. Among them, there is a significant number of Spanish projects: Calcetines, with the participation of Nacho Campa and Guillermo G. Fidalgo; Catwalk, with Omayra González Pérez and Juan Antonio García Mata; DIBUS, with José Antonio Vaca Cerezo and Adrián Andújar Jiménez; Lázaro, with Beatriz García de Leániz González; Nanomia, with Alejandro Díaz Vidal and Ruben Manchón Martínez; PUTA BARCELONA, with Pablo García-Munté; and Welcome to Fucking Rainbowland, with Nacho Subirats Morate and Nuño Benito de Castro.

Five international production projects complete the selection: the Spanish-Colombian co-production DESECHABLE, with the participation of Carlos Gómez Salamanca and León Felipe Carrizosa; the Colombian project La ruina más alta, with Douglas De La Hoz and Daniel Hincapié; the Brazilian project Martina e Guará, with Paula de Abreu and Sergio Miranda; the Brazilian-Portuguese co-production Parallel Lines at Infinity, with Isabella Papa and Baboo Matsusaki; and the Italian project The Cutting of the Forest, with Vernante Amarilla Pallotti and Elisa Maggioni.

On Saturday morning, March 2, the finalists will pitch their projects in two blocks, in which they will individually show the piece created during the workshop, as well as explain the process and the progress experienced during the training. The event will conclude with the awards ceremony and the announcement of the winning projects of this edition, which will attend Annecy MIFA 2024 and will have the opportunity to be presented during the Next Lab Generation conference. The complete program can be consulted on the event's website.

The fourth edition of Next Lab Generation is made possible thanks to funding provided by the Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA) as part of the Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience promoted by the European Union; the main sponsorship of the Community of Madrid through the Ministry of Culture; the participation of the Ministry of Culture and IBERMEDIA NEXT; and the collaboration of  HP-AMD, Annecy Festival, FOM and The AI Revolution.
